A humble painter with a passion for animals and wildlife
Artist Claire Bernard has a talent for capturing the beauty in each creature she paints, from beloved pet dogs to insects.
Wandering about the beautiful Zebediah’s Art and Craft Collective on Church Street, it’s easy to
become awestruck by the wonderful pieces of art on display. Entering the room at the back of the
shop, some of Claire’s beautiful paintings can be found there. A giant dragonfly and beetle snatch
your attention first, before the eyes traipse along to the smaller, but just as exquisite, pieces around them: a variety of beetles, fish and owls, whose features are enhanced by careful shading and attention to detail.
Claire, who is a ceramicist as well as a painter, has felt inspired by Cornwall’s landscapes. She said: “My mother’s side is Cornish, so I came down here to be closer to her. The countryside and nature provide plenty of inspiration. The pubs are also wonderful!”
For a long time, Claire kept her work space in her dining room, which proved a little difficult to manoeuvre around when she had guests.
Gently spoken and perfectly modest about her talents, Claire is a gem in Launceston’s artistic community.
“I make things up as I go along,” she said. “When I did that dragonfly - and the beetle - I thought I’d make them as big as possible. They’re such astonishing creatures to look at. I tend to use reference books - and a bit of artistic licence.”
Claire welcomes commissions for dog portraits and other pieces. To get in touch, text Claire on
