Previous history groups final project

The Local History Group, after many years of activities under the inspiring leadership of Diana Sutherland, disbanded last year.  The Group’s final project was to mount an exhibition in the Lawrence House Museum on the Buildings of Launceston, accompanied by the publication of a monograph on the subject.  The purpose of the project was to draw people’s attention to the wonderful collection of buildings in the centre of Launceston from all periods, and to provide information on the history of the buildings and the people who occupied them.  We also wanted to make a record of the current state of the town centre, particularly in view of the vulnerable nature of some of our most interesting buildings. This project has been entered by the Museum for the Cornwall Heritage Heroes Award and is one of three projects shortlisted for an award this year.  The winner will be announced at the Heritage Awards ceremony to be hosted by BBC Cornwall on 21 March. I hope many of you managed to visit the exhibition last year.  If you missed it, the monograph is still available from the Museum and the Tourist Office. Kaye Montgomery
