People living in Launceston and surrounding areas are set to benefit from fresh investment into local football facilities.
Southgate Football Club has been awarded a grant from the Premier League, The FA, and Government’s Football Foundation, to upgrade the playing facilities at Launceston College.
The Football Foundation is the UK’s largest sports charity and exists to improve the experience of playing football for everyone, by championing fair access to quality facilities.
Players will be able to enjoy better quality pitches with the current pitches prone to waterlogging, and in need of renovation.
Southgate FC and Launceston College worked with the Football Foundation and Daniel Greenough at Cornwall County FA to secure a £52,000 grant over six years towards the project.
Paul Bruton Southgate FC Secretary and Darren Crockford Head of Estates Athena Learning Trust, said: “Launceston College has fantastic sports fields but the Football Foundation grant will allow the pitches to be significantly improved and reduce cancellation of games due to waterlogged pitches, we are grateful to Cornwall FA and the Football Foundation for their support.”
Robert Sullivan, Chief Executive of the Football Foundation, said: “This grant award to Southgate FC towards developing the 5 pitches at Launceston College is great news for the local community.
“It will support people’s ability to play our national game locally and therefore help unlock football’s many benefits to physical and mental wellbeing. That’s why we’re committed to transforming the face of grassroots football facilities in this country. It’s therefore very welcome news to hear that this funding will support Southgate FC and Launceston College in developing better football pitches for their local community.
“The Football Foundation is working closely with our partners – the Premier League, The FA, government, and Sport England – support facility development projects like this across the country over the next decade to transform our grassroots game and unlock the power of pitches.”
Excellent news for the footballers and football fans amongst us!
